What Makes a Perfect Floor Tile Colour?

The perfect floor tile colour design, is one that is going to enhance and improve a space and not make it look small, cramped, or outdated. When choosing a floor tile for the room you will be tiling, here are a few questions to ask in order to narrow down your choices:

  • How big is the room? Is it a large outdoor patio, or small interior bathroom for example?
  • What is the room used for?
  • How much natural light does the room get?
  • Who will be using the room predominantly? Guests, kids, you?
  • Is there going to be a colour on the walls of the room, or will you be tiling those too?
  • What is your budget?

You ideally want a floor tile that is going to compliment the room in terms of its space, purpose and lighting and will also compliment the colours that you’ve chosen for the walls in the room too.

5 Steps to Consider Before Choosing a Tile Colour

Follow these easy steps before deciding on the style and colour you like the most.

The Purpose of The Room

Understanding the purpose of the room is key to helping you first of all decide what type of tile to use and then what colour or colours to go with. Is the room indoors or out? Is it a high-traffic area or not?

If the room is an outdoor patio for example, you’d want a tile that is not too smooth or slippery to start with. Then, depending on the style of the patio, you can choose between earthy tones of ceramics or wood look tiles, or you could even go with brilliant white porcelain tiles for a beachy, contemporary feel.

Think Texture

Don’t be afraid to play with different textures when it comes to tiles. You don’t always have to go with a smooth silky tile look like a glossy porcelain tile (unless you really love and want to of course) but you can also choose tile types that are textured in order to bring interest and depth to a floor. Consider ceramic tiles, cement look or stone look tiles in order to bring texture to a space.

You can also consider mixing and matching a floor design with a smooth and mosaic tile combination. Combining the detail and texture of a mosaic tile into a floor space can being texture and creativity to a space – especially a smaller space.

Consider Different Tile Types

Of course, budget plays a key role here in terms of only being able to look at tile types within your price range. But don’t be afraid to ask the experts at CTM what options you have available instead of assuming it has to only be one type of tile. The wide range of different tile types and colours of floor tiles at CTM, will enable you to browse through a range of types, designs, textures and colours. You may even want to consider blending two different tile types in one floor to create interest and style.

Consider The Room Size & Lighting

The colour of the floor tile is an important decision, because it can really make or break a room design. Lighter colours, like whites, creams, light greys and neutrals on the floor will make a room appear larger whereas as richer, darker colours can make a room appear smaller. For small room that do not have a lot of natural light, like guest bathrooms, or narrow passages, consider a lighter floor tile. For larger rooms that have a lot of open space and natural light, you can get more creative in terms of darker colours or more playful designs.

When it comes to colour, you also want to choose complimentary colours for floor and wall tiles too – so in spaces like kitchens and bathrooms, we recommend making use of a floor tile colour chart to help you match the ideal colours and tones for the floors and walls together.

Consider The Room’s End Users

This consideration is similar to the purpose of the room but it looks more specifically at who is going to be using the room most. Is it a kid’s playroom that is going to be used most often by young children or teenagers? Is it an outdoor patio used for entertaining family and friends? Is it a main bathroom that is going to be a quiet sanctuary for you and your partner? The end users of the room will help guide you in terms of the types and colour of tile you go with.
